We cross the north of the peninsula of Yucatan for three hours to get to know a natural paradise, a natural biosphere that the discovery channel has presented like a €œnew ecological refuge€. Do not worry there is a lot of very interesting information shared with you during the 3 hour drive to Rio Lagartos!
Biosphere
When we arrive in the heart of the reserve (Rio Lagartos), boats are waiting there for us. The boat guides are ecological experts that have taken all the necessary courses by semarnap and the park. Up to 6 or 7 passengers per boat so the group splits into two smaller groups on the boats. You can take pictures, video record while you observe the natural wonders of the reserve.
For approximately two hours we will glide through canals and openings. This tour is a photographic safari like very few in the world, and we can see crocodiles, cranes, gray and white pelicans, ibises and the beautiful and unforgettable pink flamingos. We will also stop to see the salt mines: approximately 12 miles of pink lakes, were we can dive in and have a short swim if you like. Next we will stop for a delicious lunch. The food, fish based, is enough to satisfy any appetite: shrimp crepes, sea trout fillet and grouper fillet filled with battered or grilled shrimp. Lunch is served in a simple, yet clean palapa hut ran by fishermen at the shore of the lagoon with a view of the boats that softly rock with the breeze from the ocean. White wine, sodas and beer are included, and, for those who don’t like fish, there will always be a good beef fillet or an omelet made to the customers preference. We eat without a rush and when ready we move on to the Ruins
Ek Balam Ruins
We stop for approx. 45 min to visit the Mayan Ruins of Ek Balam, a little secret hidden in the middle of the jungle. Archaeologists are still working on this site and day by day are discovering more and more of what is has hidden below so many years of jungle growth. Experts are wondering if Ek Balam may become one of the most important sights on the peninsula! Thanks to the surrounding walls it has appeared to be very well preserved. It has some of the most intricately decorated facades with statues and carvings that have have been found among the Mayan Ruins.
Mayan Village of Hunuku
Before taking the highway back, we will stop in a small Mayan village were we will have the opportunity to see and get to know the Mayan traditions and culture that even today is alive with the Mayans in the middle of the jungle.
On the ride home, there is some chat about the day… but we find many guests, relax and happily sleep on the drive home.
