Cenote Diving

The ground surface near Playa del Carmen and Tulum is made of a thin limestone, which rain water easily filters through to form underground rivers. In some places, the ground above these rivers has weakened and collapsed over time. Locally, these openings are called cenotes, and are underwater cavern openings leading to the caves of the underground rivers. Cenotes are the doors to this amazing aquatic system.

Cenote is the Mayan word for ‘sacred waters’ or what we call in English, caverns. In the diving world there are some very strict definitions that separate a cavern/cenote from a cave. This definition has been internationally regulated to ensure diving safety and enable open water certified diver’s entry into this beautiful system of stalactites and stalagmites.

Cenote-surface-diving-cavern-caves-in-MexicoDivers in caverns are always within sight of natural daylight. Every diver carries a diving light (provided without extra charge) to better see the cavern formations. Because it is an “overhead environment” (partially enclosed), cavern diving must be organized and supervised by a Full Cave Diver and certified Cavern Instructor. All of our cenote cavern dives follow these restrictions to the letter, for your safety.
