Akumal
Akumal is “The Place of the Turtle”. Every summer, endangered sea turtles return to the shores of Akumal to lay their eggs.
This once coconut plantation, sleepy little town is actually the oldest resort town along the Riviera Maya coast. Somehow, it has kept its small town size and charm and original relaxed atmosphere. It is a fantastic spot for divers and snorkelers alike. The two amazing bays are rich in sealife are perfect for snorkeling. Akumal also is home to a beautiful natural inlet, Yal-Ku Lagoon in North Akumal, another unique experience for snorkelers. The beach scene in Akumal is not lacking, Akumal has expansive public beaches with typical array of services available for visitors.
The quaintness of Akumal is supported by its handful of shops and restaurants. The small town will welcome you to join them. You will absolutely need to visit the Turtle Bay Cafe & Bakery among a few other town staples.
The nightlife of Akumal can be summed up in one place…. La Buena Vida. Since it appears to be the only thing to do in the evening after restaurants close, we are pleased to report that it is a fun and festive place where everyone is welcome!
