Local Animal Charity
We are always looking for support from animal lovers and hope you will appreciate our efforts to help the animals of our community.
We have a very serious animal over-population problem in Playa del Carmen.
A team of volunteers and veterinary professionals donate their time and skill to sterilize, and when financially possible, vaccinate and provide acute medical care to homeless animals and to pets whose owners cannot afford local veterinary clinic fees. Whenever possible, we try to educate the locals regarding the importance of sterilization, vaccination and kindness towards animals.
Some of the locals and local businesses are involved with helping the cause. We at Travel RM have been highly involved in this cause.
When possible, we trap ferral adult cats and sterilize them and take them through the recovery process then release them if/when appropriate. A local woman, Laura Raikes has been very successful in rescuing kittens rehoming them and following up for sterilization when they are old enough. The Peanut Pet Shelter also handles as many dogs and puppies as they can handle at one time.
Your donations are used solely for food, supplies and surgeries. Everyone involved volunteers his or her time.
This is what we are up against…
*Average number of litters a fertile cat can produce in one year: 3
*Average number of kittens in an average feline litter: 4-6
*In seven years, one female cat and her offspring can theoretically produce 420,000 cats.
*Average number of litters a fertile dog can produce in one year; 2
*Average number of puppies in an average litter: 6-10.
*In six years, one female dog and her offspring can theoretically produce 67,000 dogs.
Statistics provided by the Humane Society of the United States.
Even a small donation goes a long way for us since all professional care is donated. We only need to purchase the medications and supplies needed.
You can DONATE to our cause through http://www.paypal.com/. You can send donations to our “contact us” email address info@travelrm.com or click the donate button below.
We will happily put your donations to work!
We also support and organize a yearly sterilization clinic here in Playa del Carmen run by http://www.vidas.org/. They are amazing and have helped thousands of animals in our community over the past 5 years. We are actively involved in working with them to make Playa del Carmen a safe and healthy place for humans and animals alike. The 2008 Vidas clinic sterilized for free 361 cats and dogs in playa del Carmen in 4 days!!!!!! Thank you VIDAS!
