Tipping Waiters and Bartenders

One very handy tip for tourists is to be sure when in a restaurant or bar here, before paying and adding a tip… look to see if tip has already been included in the total. Not always, but often it is already included.

On your bill, an included tip could be itemized under:

“Propina” or “Servicio” look for this on your bill before paying.

You could also ask your server when looking at the bill if the tip is included. In some reataurants, it is stated on the menu whether or not it is included.

Even as a local I have to check my bills. I have caught myself many of times about to pay double tip or find a mistake in the bill.

An acceptable tip here is 10% but many people that visit from countries that it is standard to tip anyone in a service industry might pay 10-20%.

Credit Cards: Many establishments still do not accept credit cards. If you are not carrying cash, be sure to ask if they accept credit cards before eating a meal and finding you and your whole family washing dishes to pay your bill.
