GiTae PARK :
Young Kim :
Felix Hong :

Bernard Hopkins vs Felix Trinidad

Bernard Hopkins vs Felix Trinidad
All credit to Jim
Robert Romeo : Hopkins came into the ring trim and muscular, and out muscled Trinidad.
Jacques Segismond : Foreman really not a hopkins fan
Team Blue Duck : This fight and Barrera vs Hamed are the best boxing performances I've ever seen
Team Blue Duck : The best boxing performance I've ever seen
Team Blue Duck : Was George Foreman drunk or did he have a man crush on Tito?

September 18th, 1999. The Fight of the Millennium was the IBF & WBC World Welterweight Unification Showdown between 2 undefeated 26 year old boxing stars; “The Golden Boy” Oscar De La Hoya, who makes the 8th defense of his WBC title and Felix “Tito” Trinidad, who attempts to retain his IBF title for a record 15th time.

Prefight records; Trinidad 35(3)0-0, De La Hoya 31(25)-0.

At this juncture, Oscar De La Hoya was World Champion in 4 different weight classes; Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Light Welterweight & Welterweight who had beaten notable oppositions in Oba Carr, Wilfredo Rivera, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, Hector Camacho, Giorgio Campanella, Genaro Hernandez, Jimmi Bredahl, Troy Dorsey, Rafael Ruelas, John John Molina, Jesse James Leija, Jorge Paez, Ike Quartey, Pernell Whitaker & Julio Cesar Chavez (2x).

** However, it is noteworthy to consider that Julio Cesar Chavez was past his best when he faced De La Hoya both times in 1996 & 1998

Felix Trinidad on the other hand reigned as the IBF World Welterweight Champion since 1993 and have remarkably made a total of 14 successful title defenses with meaningful wins over Troy Waters, Kevin Lueshing, Hugo Pineda, Freddie Pendleton, Rodney Moore, Jake Rodriguez, Larry Barnes, Oba Carr, Luis Garcia, Luis Ramon Campas, Maurice Blocker, Hector Camacho & Pernell Whitaker.

In the early goings, the fight was tactically competitive with Oscar being more effective with the use of lateral movement to outboxed the IBF World Welterweight Champion, Tito came back strong in the 4th round by connecting with a couple of power shots.

However, the fight started to go against expectations from the 5th round onwards as De La Hoya’s work rate gradually slows down. In a number of late rounds, he appeared to be cruising and attempting to steal rounds with last minute flurries. While he was still landing precisely in some occasions, his constant periods of inactivity raised doubts and drew boos from the crowd.

While Oscar seemed to be leading after the 8th stanza, Tito took control in the 9th. In the final 3 rounds, Oscar’s output dropped even more significantly although he did threw a couple of memorable combinations.

Prior to the bout, many had their reservations as to whether or not Trinidad could win a decision against The Golden Boy in Nevada.

Interestingly, between rounds 10 and 11 Robert Alcazar (De La Hoya’s trainer) told his fighter. “That’s all that you need. Two more rounds! Okay? That’s it, and we are home!” after Gil Clancy advised Oscar to box in the 11th and 12th frames.

On the other hand, Tito’s father and trainer Felix Trinidad Sr urged his son to step on the gas pedal instead, “…We’ve got to take him now! He’s all beat up already. Now we got to get him to work. Now is your fight!”

Harold Lederman unofficially scored it 105-104 (after 11 rounds) for De La Hoya, but had his doubts as to “whether or not Oscar could win a fight running away”. He awarded the 12th to Trinidad, making his card a draw at 114 apiece.

After 12 rounds, the 3 scorecards were 115-114, 115-113 & 114-114.

Confident of bagging the win, The Golden Boy raised his hands just before Michael Buffer announced the winner.

To his shock, the MD were in favor of Felix Trinidad, which answered the question as to whether or not Tito could earn a decision against De La Hoya in Vegas.

All in all, the bout did not live up to expectations.

Trinidad-De La Hoya set the PPV record for the most buys for a non heavyweight fight at 1.4 million buys, until it was broken by Mayweather-Delahoya 8 years later which set a new record of 2.4 million buys in 2007.

8 years later in 2015, the record was once again surpassed by Mayweather-Pacquiao at 4.4 million buys; a showdown billed as “The Fight of the Century” but just as “The Fight of the Millennium”, it also failed to live up to expectations.

Who was the deserving winner in your opinion? Did Oscar do enough to win in spite of his questionable fight plan in the second half, or did it genuinely caused him the biggest win of his career?

Also, how do you guys score the fight? Let me know in the comments.

Interestingly, Oscar had stated that if he could have this fight all over again he would have gone for the kill.

Hope you guys enjoy this highlight, and remember to SUBSCRIBE! Keep punching, boxing heads.
